Ao Dai, white and plain is the most beloved dress of the Vietnamese. Traditionally, young girls wear thei ao dai for the last 3 years of high school, then stop. They don’t wear the white ao dai when they are in college or working.

The white ao dai is related to the most beautiful and romantic time of young Vietnamese boys or girls. White Ao dai becomes the symbol of innocence, the beginning of adulthood. in many poems, songs and literature and of course photography.

ELISE PHUONG and her White Ao Dai

Elise Phuong was born in Vietnam and came to the United States in her early years. But it was not too early, as she remembers growing up in Vietnam and speaks Vietnamese fluently.

Her ties back to her heritage are strong. And so, when we met for our photoshoot, she wanted to wear her traditional dress, the áo dài. This is the second set of photos taken outdoors and published in color. And while the Arizona “desert” may seem odd with this outfit, somehow, I think it works.

Elise is a 27 year-old model currently residing in Arizona.
